Just when you thought the scope of FINAS stupidity could not get any bigger, the CEO drops an absolute gem of a quote on us. As reported in Berita Harian, FINAS CEO Ahmad Idham Ahmad Nadzri has brilliantly claimed that apparently, parents are worried over their children watching uncensored content on the popular streaming platform and has called for Netflix to be censored in Malaysia.
To go into specifics, He said that the content on Netflix Malaysia “needs to be controlled due to parental concerns” and that their concerns should be taken seriously given how big Netflix has become as a major contributor to “uncensored entertainment in the uncontrolled cyber world”.

In his infinite wisdom, he went on to give his thoughts on how Netflix is shaping the hearts and minds of the future generation in a negative way because of the uncensored manner of the content on the platform.

I can’t tell for sure, but I think this Mr Ahmad Idham dude is an advocate of censorship, but again, how could I possibly know for sure, right?
FINAS already censors local content, but now they want to go after international sources as well? Good luck, my friends! Thankfully, the CEO admitted that FINAS has no power to filter content on video streaming platforms, so his opinion don’t hold as much weight as you’d have thought.
That being said, FINAS was supposed to be turning over a new leaf after years of being plagued by what can only be described as incompetent leadership. So what on earth is going on?

That’s everyone’s new favourite CEO shaking hands with a representative of the newly founded local streaming platform, AFLIX. Now AFLIX in itself already kind of sounds like a joke but maybe i’m just saying this in relation to it’s association with Mr. Ahmad Idham, or maybe i’m saying this because AFLIX dubs itself as the 1st ethical entertainment platform in Malaysia. It’s definitely the latter.

Getting back on track though, FINAS has agreed to contribute archival content to the streaming service in what is probably a show of support to the homegrown business. Which is great and all, but it kind of makes Mr. Ahmad Idham’s comments about censoring Netflix look like there’s a conflict of interest.
To be fair to the man, he did come out and attempt to clarify his comments.

Seeing as there’s this thing called a parental lock on Netflix that is quite literally the answer to the so called “parental concerns” he cited, Twitterjaya’s theory about a conflict of interest looks increasingly credible. Oh well, just another chapter in the melodrama that is Malaysian news, right?
