Netflix brings hi-tech programs to screens, be it Stranger Things of Black Mirror, but the tech does not just stop in the TV shows, the advantage screening over the internet is the quality of broadcast which can really be at its pinnacle. Depending on the countries average bandwidth, Netflix airs programs in 4K and HDR which is pushing TV sales through the roof based on these resolutions.

However on the go consumers binge watch their favourite shows on any screens they can get their hands on and Netflix an internet video streaming service offers its shows on any connected devices, be it smartphones, consoles, tablets and smart TV’s. Now the streaming service provider has announced the HDR quality shows can be watched on Windows 10 PC’ for those subscribing to the premium plans.

This feature is the culmination of a multi-year collaboration between Netflix and a number of industry partners. Intel’s 7th generation and higher CPUs provide that capability needed to play the Netflix HDR10 encodes. In addition, both Intel and Nvidia developed GPUs that use 10 bits-per-channel for each of the RGB colors, increasing the color space that can be represented. With this new hardware available in consumer PCs, Netflix and Microsoft partnered together to put the software pieces in place. Microsoft added the necessary OS and browser changes in their Windows 10 Fall Creators Update and our engineers integrated against those APIs to complete the video player work.
