Nestlé Malaysia Launches First-Ever KitKat® Crafted With Cocoa Beans From Sabah, Sarawak

Nestlé Malaysia has introduced its latest product, presenting the KitKat® Dark Borneo, a delectable treat made exclusively from cocoa beans harvested in Sabah and Sarawak.

The creation of KitKat® Dark Borneo stems from a strategic collaboration between Nestlé Malaysia and the Malaysian Cocoa Board (MCB) under the Nestlé Borneo Cocoa Initiative (NBCI), launched in September last year.

Through this partnership, Nestlé aims to bolster cocoa farming efforts in East Malaysia, thereby enhancing food security and uplifting the livelihoods of local farmers.

Utilising Trinitario cocoa beans cultivated in the fertile volcanic soil and tropical rainforest climate of Borneo, KitKat® Dark Borneo boasts a rich cocoa content of 52% and a distinctive flavor profile characterized by fruity notes.

The careful fermentation and sun-drying processes employed in its production ensure a premium quality indulgence for chocolate enthusiasts.

This newest addition to the KitKat® product range is manufactured at Nestlé’s Halal-certified Chembong industrial complex in Negeri Sembilan, equipped with state-of-the-art facilities including a Biomass Boiler plant that minimizes greenhouse gas emissions.

Serving as a prominent export manufacturing hub, the facility plays a vital role in catering to ASEAN markets and beyond.

The launch event, graced by Minister of Plantation and Commodities of Malaysia, Datuk Seri Haji Johari Abdul Ghani highlighted the nation’s potential to revitalize its cocoa industry and integrate into the global market. Johari lauded Nestlé’s efforts in supporting Borneo growers and emphasized the importance of innovation in driving industry growth and sustainability.

In a gesture of appreciation, KitKat® honored the cocoa farmers of Sabah and Sarawak, acknowledging their invaluable contribution to the production of KitKat® Dark Borneo.

The event also featured demonstrations of cocoa tree pruning and bean fermentation processes, underscoring the meticulous craftsmanship involved in producing high-quality cocoa.
