After countless leaks, finally Samsung tells us what the big six is all about.
MWC 2015 is off to a great start, with Samsung’s big reveal coming right after HTC’s own. As we all already know, the Korean giant’s flagship S series is the device being showcased – the GALAXY S6 along with the futuristic looking GALAXY S6 edge.
Rebuilt from the ground up, this new generation of GALAXY devices come sleek metallic bodies and Gorilla Glass 4 for an extra robust build, plus the very first dual-edge on the S6 edge. Furthermore, they have a variety of new features such as Microsoft apps, f1.9 (front and back!) camera lenses, improved fingerprint scanner, and the innovative Samsung Pay. They will also come with built-in wireless charging and will be able to provide four hours of use on a mere 10 minutes charge. If those numbers are true, then that’s absolutely amazing.
To power all these features, the new devices will run on one of Samsung’s new 14nm Exynos 7420 processor running on a quad-core A57 2.1GHz plus quad-core A53 1.5GHz big.Little configuration, the Mali T760 MP8 GPU, and 3GB of DDR4 (wow!) RAM. Suffice to say, they are going to be real powerhouses. The OS will be improved and is based on Android 5.0 Lollipop.
On the flipside, the twin smartphones don’t sport removable batteries and microSD slot we’ve come to expect from the Korean brand’s annual offering.
When are these devices coming? We’re not sure. Samsung says that the two smartphones will be launched simultaneously in 20 countries on 10 April. Malaysia is likely not in that list, but hopefully we won’t be that far behind. Considering Samsung’s massive distribution channels, we can be hopeful for a quick follow up.
Prices are also unconfirmed right now, as the Korean company is being tight-lipped about it, but we estimate the S6 to be in the RM2,500 range. The S6 edge will most probably be priced similarly to the Note Edge as well, which came in at RM2,999. It’s hard to tell how GST will affect exact pricing yet, but hopefully the difference won’t be drastic.
