Developer Mojang has announced a new spin-off game set in its vast Minecraft universe, called Minecraft: Dungeons. This action-adventure game, inspired by classic dungeon crawlers, comes to PC in 2019.
In the game, you team up with up to four friends to explore a dungeon filled with treasure and action. Your goal is to save the villagers captured by the evil Arch-Illager. Throughout your journey, you will discover new weapons and items, as well as many dangerous mobs. As you’d expect, the dungeons you explore procedurally generate as you play.
According to the company, the development of Minecraft: Dungeons was actually kept under wraps for a very long time.
The announcement trailer showcases mostly cinematics, but also describes equipment, monsters and more, hinting at what we can expect going forward. No details are known as to when Mojang plans to show us more.
The best-selling Minecraft game features a sandbox world procedurally generated from blocks. In the game, players could explore the world, gather resources, craft items, as well as fend off monsters. Critics touted the game for its creative and educational value. It also went on to become a popular social phenomenon amongst children and adults alike.
The game is no stranger to spin-offs. Back in 2016, Telltale Games developed a narrative-driven game based on the property, called Minecraft: Story Mode. This time, however, the second spin-off is being developed in-house.
