Mercedes Concept EQ Electric SUV Delivers 0-100 Under 5

Acknowledging that electric is the future for automobiles, Mercedes Benz and other luxury car manufacturers have been busy developing their own version of vehicles that does not require combustion engines.

With Tesla leading the pack with Model S and Model 3, traditional car makers have started to catch up with growing demands are now starting to bring out the fire power with sleek and stylish cars. Concept EQ from Mercedes is a concept vehicle, with the appearance of a sporty SUV coupé, gives a preview of a new generation of vehicles with battery-electric drives that can sustain with a range of up to 500 kilometres in a single charge.

The new generation of electric vehicles will be based on an architecture developed specifically for battery-electric models, which is scalable and usable across all models: the wheelbase and track width and the batteries, are variable thanks to the modular building-block system. The basic architecture is made to be applicable for SUVs, saloons, coupés, cabriolets and other model series.

To keep the car light, Mercedes used a multi-material mix of steel, aluminium and carbon fibre.

The interior of “Concept EQ” is kept familiar with traditional switches and knobs, except for the electric seat adjustment. Two of the three narrow spokes on the steering wheel has touch controls for icons and menu symbols. In replace of the tachometer dash a 24-inch (53 x 11 cm) TFT high-definition wide-screen display offers all the relevant information, such as speed, range, driving data or navigation and map details.

Powering the vehicle are two electric motors on the front and rear axles and a battery in the vehicle floor providing a total output of up to 300 kW in the most powerful variant and a maximum torque of up to 700 Newton metres. The Mercedes SUV can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in under five seconds and achieve a range of up to 500 kilometres in single charge.

For those keen to get a glimpse of the future from Mercedes, the Concept EQ SUV will be on display at Desa Park City Waterfront from May 4- 7.
