I Choose You! Niantic Announces Mega Evolutions Coming To Pokemon GO This Month!

I know what some of you guys might be thinking; What the hell is a Mega Evolution? Where have I been all this time? And you’re right, where have you been all this time?

Not to worry my friends, I am here to help you with that info. Mega Evolution in the Pokemon universe is a temporary transformation introduced in Generation VI that affects certain Pokémon. Mega Evolution was introduced to the mainline Pokémon series in Pokémon X and Y and continued in Sun and Moon.

Mega-Evolved Pokemon are identified by having “Mega” in front of their name. Mega Evolution however does not  appear in the most recent games Sword and Shield  or in the mobile game, Pokemon Go. That is until recently.

Yes, that’s right! Niantic is releasing a new Mega Evolution feature for Pokemon Go on August 27, bringing more powerful evolved forms of certain Pokemon to the game. In the mobile game, instead of a Mega Stone like the mainland games, you’ll need to gather a new resource called Mega Energy to Mega Evolve your Pokemon. You’ll receive Mega Energy by participating in Mega Raid Battles.

For now, only 4 Mega Evolutions are introduced in Pokemon Go which are the evolutions for Beedrill, Blastoise, Charizard, and Venusaur. No news yet whether more Mega Evolutions will be added to the game later on. A new Pokedex feature will let you keep track of which Pokemon you’ve Mega Evolved in the past. Once you’ve Mega Evolved a specific Pokemon a single time, you won’t need as much energy to do so again in the future.

But wait! There’s more! To celebrate the release of this new update to the game, Niantic is holding three Mega Evolution-themed events in September. The first runs from September 1-7 and challenges players to complete as many Mega Raids as they can.

Players will then be tasked with using Mega-Evolved Pokemon in battles against Team Go Rocket members and Raid bosses from September 11-17. The final event runs from September 22-28 where players will build up their level of friendship with their Mega-Evolved Pokemon.

Are you excited for this? I know I am! I can’t wait to try it out! See you all at the raids!
