Email scam has reached new levels in Malaysia, scammers have used well know tycoons like Tan Sri Tony Fernandes and Tan Sri Ananda Krishnan in their cryptocurrency traps but this latest move takes the cake.  These culprits have gone for the top CEO in the country have now resorted in using our Prime Minister’s name to lure victims into their Bitcoin scam.

A recent letter purportedly from the Prime Minister Office was found to be circulating among top government linked companies inviting them to support the Prime Minister on his Bitcoin venture. This was also followed by a personal letter from Dr Mahathir asking GLC’s Chiefs to throw their support to a Bitcoin business website. Both were fake and the PMO quickly addressed the issue and highlighted that no such letter/email was sent and reminded everyone that the PM will only issue statements via the office.

The case has prompted MCMC to open investigation against the perpetrators responsible for the act as such misuse of the highest level official in the country is an offence. Together with the Royal Police the agency is on a manhunt to identify the person/s who was bold enough to carry out the scam. If convicted anyone who sends out fake information, comments can be fined RM50,000 or face jail terms. Public is again reminded not to be fooled by such messages or emails, and requests anyone who receives such messages to contact the authority immediately.
