Laser Communications Within a Chip – Intel’s New Technology

Laser_play

Intel currently has a new technology that will transform the way we all communicate with our computers and make it a 100 to 400 times faster than WiFi, this new technology is called Silicon Photonics. In which, laser light is transmitted via glass fiber optics cables rather than electrons within a traditional copper cable.

According to Intel, traditional copper cable would go up to 25 gigabits max before hitting a wall, while Silicon Photonics can go up to 400 gigabits. Although this new laser technology won’t be released for the average user use yet, it will help information on servers like Facebook or Google to transmit way faster than ever. It will also help servers to keep a larger amount of data.

Fiber optics is widely used for undersea cables and such, but Intel is looking into making this laser technology cheaper for short distance use. Intel will keep us updated with this new technology.
