Instagram to implement AI for visually impaired users

Instagram has announced that it will be unveiling new features that will allow its users who are visually impaired to hear descriptions of the photos through screen readers. This will be done through AI or custom descriptions that are added by users.

Known as “alt text”, these descriptions are used all over the internet and are now being implemented into the social media platform. Users will be able to enter their very own descriptions as well so that others who are using screen readers will be able to hear it aloud as they browse their feed.

Screen readers are software that describes the elements that are displayed on a screen. If there are no descriptions available, Instagram will automatically identify the objects or person in the photo through a recognition technology.

Furthermore, users will have to go into a photo’s advanced settings in order to include the descriptions as the alt text description settings will not be visible.

Tech giant, Facebook has been using AI to describe photos to blind users for years and now visually impaired users will have a better experience using Instagram as well.
