Chinese tech site PCOnline got their hands on an early release of Intel’s upcoming Kaby Lake i5 CPU, and put it through testing immediately. The results were a tad disappointing.

The silicon in question is a Core i5-7600K processor which succeeds the current Skylake 6600K. This quad core is clocked at 3.8 GHz and Turbo Boosts to 4.2GHz, making full use of its 6MB of L3 cache. Its higher clock speed (compared to the 6600K) was the only real reason for the resulting 10% speed increase over its Skylake predecessor. This means not that Intel focused more on managing power efficiency, as the new chip draws the same amount of power despite the gains.

There also seems to be a better iGPU, all part of Intel’s plan to allow more users to use just their CPUs to play high res videos.
