At the closing ceremony, Huawei Malaysia and the Ministry of Education announced the Malaysia winning team of the Huawei ICT Competition, qualifying to represent the country in the regional phase of the competition. Deputy Minister of Education, YB Teo Nie Ching was in attendance to present the award to the winners. Over 200 undergraduates from seven local universities participated in the competition.

Huawei has developed the Huawei Certification System that is becoming a standard for ICT talent development. Participants of the competition got the opportunity to gain exposure and experience the latest cutting-edge technologies in Huawei’s state-of-the-art labs.

As part of the Huawei ICT Academy initiative, the competition aims to address the gap between talent and requirements in the industry, by working with universities in producing well-rounded and multi-skilled professionals.

Speaking at the event, the Deputy Minister of Education, YB Teo Nie Ching has stated that:

“Programs such as the Huawei ICT Competition help to bridge the gap in course curriculum and practical requirements in the country. We are grateful to Huawei Malaysia for bringing this global competition to us, as it supports our mission of nation building and digital transformation. An experience like this, helps prepare and shape students to attain highly competitive skills to thrive in this information era. I am proud to say that today’s winners will represent our country internationally and wish them much success in the upcoming rounds of the competition.”

While Mr. Baker Zhou, CEO of Huawei Malaysia said,

“At Huawei, we aim to promote greater understanding of ICT through technologies training, increase interest and develop talents with practical skills for the students and the community. Currently on 5G, Huawei has 2,570 5G patents, and have signed 30-plus commercial contracts and shipped 25,000 base stations. We need to transfer our cutting-edge ICT knowledge and experiences to the next generation to prepare for what’s to come.”

He added,

“With the Huawei ICT Competition, we aim to encourage and reward students showcasing exceptional talent, and nurture it for developing the digital economy of Malaysia and other participating countries. The winners of this competition stand to receive industry recognized certification with employable skills, and a range of job opportunities in the ICT sector.”

The participating universities were Universiti Malaya, (UM), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR), Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN) and Taylor’s University.

Other participating countries included Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines and Australia.
