HP is accustomed to cutting jobs, the largest PC brand in the world has been downsizing its operation since restructuring its business, seperating its PC and enterprise business for quite sometime now. CEO Dion Weisler has come out stating that there will be another 5000 job cut by 2019, this in his pursuit to make the company lean and mean and be competitive again.

Since taking over from Meg Whitman, HP has shown significant progress and recorded year on year profits to the extent of dethroning Lenovo as the number 1 PC manufacturer. All this despite global slide in PC sales, the HP brand has seen improvement its notebook sales and has since launched new design models like the Spectre and Envy that have given a boost to its portfolio.

The axing of jobs comes at a time when global PC companies are uncertain on the future of the industry with analysts like IDC and GFK reporting further erosion marked by the rise of high performace smartphones and longer refresh rate for newer PCs. Consumers are not replacing their notebooks as frequent as the manufacturers would like them to, giving the industry a bleak outlook.

We could be seeing more brutal cuts in coming years from other brands as competition kicks in and further shrinking takes place in the industry.
