How Addicted Are You to Social Media?

Social media’s impact on one’s self-esteem and productivity has always been a topic of interest for researchers and commentators. Last year, a survey conducted by the Royal Society of Public Health (RSPH) and the Young Health Movement found Instagram to cause the most amount of damage to young people’s mental wellbeing amongst social networks, with Facebook coming in third after Snapchat.

Whether taking into account these findings or simply as an added benefit to users, Facebook has added a usage tracking capacity to both the titular app and its sister platform Instagram. Via the ‘Your Activity’ feature on both Facebook and Instagram, you can now find out how long you spend on the social media sites each day of the week as well as how much time you spend scrolling on average per week.

These new dashboard features are added to the social networks as part of Facebook’s “time well-spent” movement, which aims to get people off their devices or at least keep them aware of how much time they spend on social media.

It also comes with other additional features like Manage Your Time which allows you to set how long you would want to use the app. After which, a dialogue box will appear, alerting you that you have reached the usage limit.

The Notification Settings menu has also been updated to include a Mute Push Notification option which might restrain your urge to check on every notification that comes in.

To access the feature, tap on the Menu icon next to the Notification icon, tap on Settings & Privacy and your Time on Facebook will be located there.

Although Instagram’s ‘Your Activity’ feature is already available in Malaysia, Facebook’s version of it is still awaiting update for this region at the moment. However, if this feature is something that you need right away, you could use Apple’s Screen Time or Google’s Digital Wellbeing, which help you by providing the same information as well as help curb your “addiction” to social media.
