According to the Malaysian Customs Department, popular online streaming services like Netflix and iflix may be taxed soon. This comes after Director-general Datuk Seri T.Subromaniam talks about how the tax will come under the proposed amendments to the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Act. This will likely include the digital economy that includes e-commerce sites and the such.
The latest GST Act amendments have been submitted to the Finance Ministry and are expeceted to be tabled in the Dewan Rakyat in later October. This proposed amendment may hinder many into paying the extra charges for Netflix and iflix. As it stands, Netflix has three existing plans, priced at RM33, RM42 and RM51 while iflix has only one plan at only RM10. All these plans are paid on a monthly basis.
*Update: We have just received word that iflix already charges, reports and pays Malaysian GST for all services and has been GST compliant since they first made our service available to consumers throughout Malaysia.
