The Tango augmented reality platform was ground breaking when Google announced it 2 years back, when we had the chance to test the devices at CES in 2015 with Lenovo devices it was thrilling seeing 3D effects generated on mobile phones. But now Google is shutting down the project and thanked developers and programmers for working on the program in these last few years.

But not all’s lost, Google is moving its focus on a more mass market technology with ARCore introduced 4 months back. Calling on those who worked on Tango to continue to the journey new project which is a more simplified platform that can be easily integrated into the popular phones. (currently on Pixel and Samsung Galaxy 8) ARCore works quite similar to Tango but borrows concepts from Microsoft Hololens, which basically allows users with a ARCore smartphone to add virtual objects in real surroundings using three fundamental technologies, motion tracking, environmental understanding and light estimation.

Nevertheless, while we anticipate amazing things coming to Android with the new technology but for those holding on to expensive Tango sets like the Lenovo Phab 2 and Asus Zenfone AR this bit of news is going to painful.
