Google has announced several experimental updates for its Lenovo Mirage Solo headset, that will allow developers to experiment with Android VR in different ways. The headset runs on Google’s own Daydream platform.

The update adds APIs which support positional controller tracking with six degrees of freedom (6DoF) of its Mirage Solo headset. Using 6DoF tracking, users can move their hands more naturally in VR, just like in the real world. Instead of using sensors to work, the controllers instead use machine learning to properly gauge 3D position and orientation. The goal of this is to bring a similar experience while cutting on cost.
Another feature Google is bringing to Daydream is See-Through Mode. This lets the wearer of the headset see what’s in the real world on the other side. This allows for mixing virtual elements with the real world. Rather than purely VR, Google has opened the door for development in AR. Google demonstrated this with a demo of virtual furniture being placed around a real room.
Lastly, Google is working to support all Android smartphone apps in Daydream, called Android Apps. With this, developers can use their favourite games or tools in VR easily. Alternatively, adding Daydream support to existing 2D apps will be made easier.
