Glasses For Hearing, Not For Seeing; The HUAWEI Gentle Monster Eyewear II Review

November 30, 2020

This is far overdue but better late than never, right? Right? Anyways, along with the HUAWEI FreeBuds Studio headphones, I got the chance to review the Gentle Monster Eyewear!

I honestly wasn’t sure how I was going to review this product as I’m someone who wears glasses all day everyday but don’t worry, I did test out the product. We even made an unboxing and reaction videos of this product (be sure to watch and subscribe, please!) which you can watch on our YouTube channel.

So for this review, we’re going to be looking at the design, features I’ve tested and I will give you guys my final thoughts at the end. So without any further ado, here is the review.

Design

You can never go wrong with the colour Black. It goes with anything. At first glance, the Gentle Monster Eyewear II looks like everyday, ordinary glasses which is the point. It blends right in.

The lenses don’t serve any function but I’m assuming you can replace them with your own prescribed lenses or else you’ll just be walking blind. You’ll look good but you’ll might get into several accidents not being able to see well.

The frame of the glasses is very thick but they don’t really feel heavy. As someone who wears glasses, it feels good putting them on.

Bluetooth Connection

A smart glasses must always come with Bluetooth. The Gentle Monster II’s connectivity is so good. What is the bluetooth for? Audio. The glasses have speakers at each side of the frame so when you put them on, it feels like you’re wearing headphones. You can see our reactions in the videos.

I say the bluetooth is good cause of the range. I can put my phone downstairs of my house and still be able to hear clearly when upstairs in my room. From experience, you definitely don’t have to worry about not being able to hear clearly or if there’s a lag in the sound unless the call connection itself is bad.

But if you’re just listening to music, just leave your phone or device anywhere in the house and you can go about your day at home while listening to your favourite tunes.

Sound Quality

As mentioned in our videos, the sound quality is really, really good. Personally, when trying them on and putting on music, it felt like I was wearing headphones. It felt like the sound was coming from inside my head. Don’t know how to explain it that well but yes. Just make sure to not put the music on full volume as others may hear it as well.

As for phone calls, I personally don’t think you will worry about the call being laggy or distorted as it sounded super clear for me. We tested the call in our office and even from the caller’s side, it sounds clear. You may look weird however appearing to be talking to basically no one though but if you can look weird wearing earphones and talking then wearing glasses wouldn’t make a difference.

Functions

So the Gentle Monster II don’t have buttons for you to press when you want to receive a call or adjust the volume. Instead, all it took were simple touches. To pick up a call, simply tap twice on the right frame and tap twice again to hang up. To adjust volume, simply swipe left or right side of the frame. All these are demonstrated in our videos.

In terms of how well they work, they work just fine. No complications whatsoever, unless your hair is in the way but other than that, the Gentle Monster does responds really well to gentle touch.

Final Thoughts

So that is it for my review for the HUAWEI Gentle Monster Eyewear II. I didn’t have much time to test it out to the fullest after realising that I won’t be able to see well unless I switch the lenses but I did what I can and for all the things I’ve tested, I was really impressed.

I think at a price of RM 1,599.00, you’ll get your money’s worth. The design is nice, it feels really comfortable, the features work just fine, the bluetooth connection is great, and it can fast charge too! Very convenient. I feel it’s definitely great for working people to have these glasses to go about their day.

I know some would wish the Gentle Monster has a camera to take photos and videos but for security and privacy purposes, it’s understandable why HUAWEI left those out as some people might abuse them to actually spy on people or cheat on tests. Not good. But who knows maybe in the future, it will come with a camera.
