Microsoft announced that they will be releasing a new feature called Game Chat Transcription.
In a blog post, Xbox Program Manager, Evelyn Thomas wrote that this feature is in pilot and will be rolled out to Xbox One and Windows 10 PCs, allowing speech-to-text and text-to-speech capabilities.
Game Chat Transcription works in two ways. You can choose to convert all player’s voice communications in the game chat into text, allowing you to read the text on screen in real-time; or you can have typed text spoken aloud to other players in the game. This feature is meant to make games more accessible and inclusive, providing new ways of communication.
While the feature has to be supported by the game itself, Microsoft plans to roll it out to more games in the future. Currently it’s only available in Halo Wars 2.
Gamers looking to try this out can activate the feature through Ease of Access under the Settings menu. Users can choose speech-to-text or text-to-speech in the menu. You can also choose the voices for text-to-speech in the voice menu.
