Samsung is taking a second bite at the Fold cherry after its first attempt failed miserably, the Korean smartphone giant has just announced that it is all set to launch the Galaxy Fold in September.

The race for foldable phones began last year and was its peak at this years Mobile World Congress in Barcelona when all the Chinese and Korean brands showed of their prototype videos as if they were racing to the Moon. Production was rushed, details were kept secret, Huawei and Samsung were pitting against each other to see who would pioneer the Foldable phones commercially and the world was watching. What looked like a 2 horse race soon changed, certain trade issues were unfolding for Huawei leaving the Chinese giant halted at the tracks giving Samsung all the opportunity to take the lead. Like a Road Runner cartoon, the Coyote that gets ahead of the bird always ends up messing thing up due to its own missteps, for Samsung it was quite the same. The Galaxy Fold launch date was announced for May, a few select media were handed units for trial and the bosses at Seoul popped champagne bottles only to stuff the cork back after reading in horror the first reviews of the phones.

With screen cracks and display distortion, the first iteration of the Galaxy Fold was a total disaster with Samsung first claiming the models sent were in beta and assured the public the production versions will be improved. But no one was convinced, soon after top management personals from the company issued statement on the potential delay and did not disclose any date for the launch.

Now after 3 months, the problems have been fixed and Samsung is ready to show-off the new category of smartphone to the world…again. It claims that necessary improvements and rigorous tests were conducted on design and construction. The top protective layer on the Infinity display which were cracking up after multiple fold, has been extended beyond the bezel, making it apparent that it is an integral part of the display structure and not meant to be removed. Engineers have added additional reinforcements to protect the device from external particles, top and bottom of the hinge area have been strengthened with newly added protection caps and additional metal layers underneath the Infinity Flex Display have been included to reinforce the protection of the display.

We have to hand it to Samsung for going ahead with release and not scrapping the model all together after all there is no horse behind them and have the track all to themselves. Besides, the euphoria has died down for Foldables with no obvious pent up demand for a novelty product (we still don’t see any compelling reason for a foldable tablet in the market) so why continue? Then again the same was for an oversized smartphone with a stylus.
