We all know what Facebook is capable of, apart from seeing your friends holiday pictures and watching random videos, the social media platform has also been known to be used to change governments and coerce mass public to lean towards towards a certain ideology. All’s needed is some money!
That’s the reason we hear much about Facebook being used to manipulate the public when it comes to election and voting. From Myanmar, USA to Brexit there are evidence the platform played a role on the final decision. Having defended and denied of any wrong doing, Facebook continues to operate and still rakes in mass amount of advertising revenue with suspected money coming from bad actors who paid for contents.
In an effort to get its act together, Facebook has been on public relation overdrive, reporting on its investigation team removing dubious accounts and blocking certain contents being advertised. Recently, the company claimed to have detected suspicious accounts in Bangladesh whereby it discovered Pages designed to look like independent news outlets that posted pro-government and anti-opposition content. Investigation indicated that the activity was linked to individuals associated with the Bangladesh government and they were subsequently taken down. Facebook played judge and jury in this case, where no one can question its actions. The alleged dubious account had also spent RM3500 ad money.
The type cases which are cropping up all of a sudden and the so call Facebook team scouring the site daily for suspicious activity sounds daunting, does it have the resources to check every single account every day? How will it know what is real and what is fake? If I were to promote our PH government extensively, will my account will be taken down, or will I be investigated once I start paying to advertise by content? Is there really an investigation team in Facebook or is it just algorithm zero’ing on keywords?
