Hands up – how many of you are in group chats and deciding on where to eat is a mission on its own? Or maybe deciding on a date for a meeting? With many people chipping in at once – it gets messy.

Facebook messenger is trying to reduce that problem by introducing reaction button for messages. TechCrunch first reported that one of their readers gave them a heads-up about that test. Facebook confirmed to TechCrunch, noting “We’re always testing ways to make Messenger more fun and engaging. This is a small test where we enable people to share an emoji that best represents their feelings on a message.”

So this is still in pilot, not everyone can see it; but if many people like it, it’ll stay.

The way it works is, when you hover over messages you’ve received, you can tap and attach emoji, including thumbs-up, thumbs-down, or a heart-eyes, lol, wow, sad, or angry. A reaction counter will tally up each emotion to that particular message. As per seen in Facebook reactions, you can also click on the counter to see who reacted in what way.

While it was highly requested, Facebook never rolled out a dislike button, as they didn’t want to to put too much negativity on the News Feed. With the thumbs down found on Messenger, its seen more like a “no” button – for Facebook anyway. As Messenger is a popular platform for organising and planning, its a quick answer to get logistics moving.

This feature is seen as similar to iMessage’s Tapback emoji, as well as Emoji Reactions on Slack, a popular work chat application. On both apps, it has been quite successful, especially for quick fire responses.
