I don’t know about you guys, but when I think internet, I think memes. Memes are an integral part of what keeps us (me, really) sane. I mean, look at the success of platforms such as 9GAG, reddit and 4chan. I mean yeah the latter two are forums but it’s the memes that make up the heart and soul of it all.

That being said, Facebook wants in on all the fun too. Just last week, the company’s NPE (New Product Experimentation) team quietly rolled out a new app called Whale that lets users create memes. As of right now, it’s only available in good ol’ Canada but depending on how it takes off there, it could make see a global release.

With Whale, users can basically upload photos or choose from Facebook’s stock library of photos, add on all sorts of text, emojis and filters and hopefully create the dankest of all viral memes. It also gives users the option of using a free form drawing tool for that extra bit of customization.

Facebook’s NPE divison was set up a couple of month’s back to try out all sorts of experimental Facebook apps but based on Facebook’s track record, I wouldn’t bet on Whale seeing a worldwide roll out anytime soon. The company has a knack for trying out all sorts of apps that will appeal to the younger audience only to see it pulled in the end. The creation of NPE comes as the company tries its best to maintain its relevance amongst a new wave of apps such as TikTok and Twitch, which have taken the gen Z population by storm.

I don’t know about this one. The netizens don’t seem to have trouble making memes on their own, I highly doubt Whale is going to catch on. In fact, there will probably be more memes about Whale than memes made with Whale. Let’s wait and see, shall we.
