Looks like YouTube isn’t the only one that is coming out with programming on their web. According to a report by Business Insider, Facebook is also planning something similar to debut in mid-June.
BI wrote: “Facebook plans to have roughly two-dozen shows for this initial push and has greenlit multiple shows for production, according to people familiar with the discussions. They said that the social network has been looking for shows in two distinct tiers: a marquee tier for a few longer, big-budget shows that would feel at home on TV, and a lower tier for shorter, less expensive shows of around 5-10 minutes in length that refreshes every 24 hours.”
According to BI, CollegeHumor cofounder Ricky Van Veen, who Facebook hired in December to be its global creative strategy chief, is leading the operations to secure exclusive shows. A small team has been meeting with production companies, hearing pitches for episodic shows 5-30 minutes in length, which will live in a revamped version of Facebook’s video tab.
Apparently the type of shows you can expect could range from “House of Cards” level to budget shows that are in between TV and digital shows. There’s also rumours about a virtual reality dating show from Condé Nast Entertainment in which people go on first dates in VR before they meet in real life. Apparently this has been given the go ahead.
Other rumours include A-list celebrities starring in some shows, and Facebook pushing really hard on targeting the teen audience. Finally, Facebook could be pushing for sports channels, something not unlike Twitter’s attempts.
So far, as far as BI’s sources state, they will be employing something akin to YouTube’s model – free to watch and supported by advertisements.
