Square Enix has recently announced that Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age has achieved four million in units sold worldwide. This amount includes physical digital sales across the PlayStation 4 and Nintendo 3DS versions of the game.
As Gematsu reports, although this is an impressive number, about 3,266,285 sales account for Japan alone. This means that international shipments make up about 800,000 units or so, which is only around 20% of the total sales if we’re being generous.
Considering that Square Enix went to great lengths to update and localise Dragon Quest XI for its international fans – even going as far as adding voiced dialogue – it’s difficult to say whether this performance falls in line with the company’s expectations. The company previously mentioned that it might not localise future Dragon Quest titles if this one were to not perform well.
In other news, Square Enix has also announced a brand new Dragon Quest Monsters game, starring characters you may recognise from DQXI. Though details on this new game are sparse, the publisher revealed that the title will feature Erik and Mia as main protagonists.

If you’ve played Dragon Quest XI and think this is interesting, you’ll have to hope that the sales of the recent title met Square Enix’s expectations. Otherwise, there’s always a lengthy study course in Japanese for you, though that’s probably not ideal.
Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age is available now on PlayStation 4. The Nintendo 3DS version is available only in Japan.
