I’ve been saying this for a while now but Donald Trump only cares about one thing and that’s winning reelection. He’s proved this time and time again not only with his late response to the pandemic at the start, but also throughout with his seeming nonchalance about the virus and continued defiance of science and well, logic.
The coronavirus is contagious and it can kill. That is a fact. Over 487,000 people have died worldwide and 124,614 of those deaths are Americans. But what is the narrative that Trump wants to push? That his administration has it under control. That there is no second wave. That it’s because of his administrations efficiency in testing that there are so many cases.
It’s gotten to a point where it’s utterly ridiculous. I read an article on CNN that said that Trump has been suggesting that the coronavirus is under control for 156 days now. That’s five months where 2.4 million Americans have tested positive and more than 121,000 have died. That is what Trump calls “Under control.”
None of the above is fictionalised and yet, the Trump still refuses to quarantine himself because he’s “not a civilian”, refuses to wear a mask, and honestly at this point refuses utilise logical reasoning (which at this point i’m confident he’s unable to do) and all for what? To win reelection?
There’s not going to be an America left to govern if he doesn’t start taking the virus seriously. Three of the most populous states in the US; Florida, Texas and California, have just broken records for new coronavirus cases daily. California recorded 7000 new cases while Florida reported 5000 cases two days in a row.
Trump has essentially left it to State governors to deal with the problem because to Trump, reelection is everything. He went on ahead with his reelection rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma and now multiple members of Trump’s campaign staff have contracted the virus.
He dispersed a crowd gathered outside the White House with tear gas, flash bangs and rubber bullets just so he could have a photo op with a church and even reopened churches early because he knows that a big chunk of his support comes from the White evangelicals.
He’s positioned himself as the “saviour” of the US economy by pushing for the it to reopen ASAP whilst continuously expressing that he’s not worried about the virus. The reality is that Trump doesn’t even know when there’s going to be a vaccine, no one really does.
Donald Trump is a smart guy who knows what he’s doing. Sadly for Americans, the lives of his fellow countrymen just don’t seem to be first on his list and unfortunately for everyone, that’s just what you get when you have someone as selfish as Trump in the oval office.
