Disney Is Working On National Treasure 3; But Will Nicholas Cage Return Along With The Franchise?

It’s hard to believe that Disney put a wrench in the National Treasure franchise after just two movies. The second movie, National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets, more than triple its initial $130 million USD budget. The movie was well received by the public and it’s rare that a sequel does better than it’s original movie. The only problem is, the sequel came out way back in 2007. Why would Disney make anyone wait that long for every pseudo-historians (myself included) favourite treasure hunter to come back?!

After a long 13 year wait, all you National Treasure fans will be delighted to know that screenwriter Chris Bremner has confirmed that National Treasure 3 is officially in the works. According to The Hollywood Reporter,

“Bremner’s schedule is heating up as he is also writing National Treasure 3 for Disney, among other projects. That project is being produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, who is also the producer behind Bad Boys for Life.”

That’s right folks, this essentially means that we’ll finally be able to find out what’s on page 47 of the President’s Book of Secrets! Fans have been left to speculate for more than a decade and there’s even a reddit thread full of fan theories, so they can’t say their short on ideas for the third installment. That being said though, very little has actually been confirmed about the project, with the biggest question mark being whether or not the legendary Nicholas Cage will return to portray Benjamin Franklin Gates.

Lets be real here, Nicholas Cage IS the National Treasure franchise. I mean, it just wouldn’t be the same without the dude. Say what you want about him but even when he stars in absolute trainwrecks, there’s just something magical about the way he goes about the art of acting. Disney wouldn’t possibly go on ahead with the third movie without him, would they?! I certainly hope not.
