To become an intelligent city, it first needs to connect to every possible ‘thing’ (connected objects) within the vicinity. Embedding sensors on lamp post that lights brightly when movement detected can save the city on electricity bills. Monitoring weather condition, like humidity, temperature, and soil ph balance can keep parks and plants green and healthy throughout the year. To have all this sensors communicate and send data requires massive network that absorb kilowatts of energy. However, there is technology that offers city-wide connectivity and more importantly uses low power, LoRa network or Long Range Low Power Network.
Cyberjaya has embarked on a city wide deployment of this technology and would become the first city in Southeast Asia to be connected with a LoRa network.
The technology that is more advanced and is designed to meet the demands of today’s Internet of Things (IoT) applications and services has also been proven to reduce cost due to its minimal infrastructure requirements, fast deployment with minimal configuration, and lower cost of gateway and modules.
The Collaboration is a project initiation by both Cyberview and Atilze a Taiwan based technology company in taking the first step and moving Malaysia towards an advanced ICT country. Cyberjaya is seen as Global Tech Hub that has been selected as a ‘living lab’ for IoT technologies under the governments National IoT Strategic roadmap.
During the signing ceremony, CEO Cyberview Dato’ Faris Yahaya said, “Around this time last year, we set out to develop Cyberjaya into a model ‘Smart and Safe City’ through IoT. With this collaboration, Cyberview and Atilze will be working together to elevate the city towards being a ‘Living Lab’ to nurture and grow IoT talents and businesses in the city.
Study done by Forrester Consulting and IDC shows that IoT is moving ahead as the leader of the IoT adoption in the Asia Pacific region. Statistic shown by Frost & Sullivan that the total spending for IoT in the Asia Pacific estimated at USD 10 billion in 2014, which will grow to reach US 59 billion by 2020.
