
More deaths are being reported as efforts to stem the deadly disease continues to be in vain, China is at the epicenter of the coronavirus that has so far spread to 11 countries.
Chinese news agency Xinhua confirms there are now 106 deaths as of today and a total of 4515 cases with many still unknown or undeclared. As of Janaury 24 there were 2744 confirmed cases and 80 deaths, however just within 24 hours China’s National Health Commission recorded 1771 new cases and 26 deaths. Of these cases there are another 976 who are in grave condition with Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan having also confirmed eight, seven and five cases, respectively. In addition, other 6,973 people are suspected of being infected. At the moment, 44,132 more people, who were in close contact with those diagnosed, are being monitored.
Beijing has called for speedy updates on the status and extended the holiday break for 2 more days in order to contain the situation. The virus was first detected in Wuhan Province days before the Lunar New Year break supposedly from a seafood restaurant, but quickly spread effecting the elderly and those with weak immune system.
World Health Organisation has yet to declare the situation as ‘Global Pandemic Outbreak’ which will change the way countries and airlines handle the situation, the risk level is currently declared as ‘high’ which was changed from ‘moderate’.
