Boy oh boy, this is one heck of a Computex. Intel shows off one of their yet unannounced chip at Computex 2018, a whopping 28-core monster! It’s base speed is already 5.0GHz making it one of the fastest single socket chips we’ve seen.
This reveal of a prototype chip definitely breaks away from Intel’s tradition. Intel has the 28-core CPU destroying the Cinebench benchmark test in a mere seconds. Of course, dumping so many cores onto a single socket chip means the TDP is a lot higher too. Indeed, the 28-core chip’s TDP is up quite a bit, at 205W over an 18-core’s 165W. This means we can expect this to be a high end server chip or as a rival to AMD’s Threadripper. Personally I’m hoping for it to be an enthusiast chip because we already have 28-core server chips such as the Xeon 8180, but for a consumer product? That would be shockingly amazing. Beside, the Xeon 8180 is only clocked at 2.50GHz and is a multi-socket chip, compared to the unannounced 28-core, 5.0GHz, single-socket chip!
We don’t know any more details nor do we know the price, but it’s almost certain it’ll be expensive; Xeon chips with 28-cores go for over USD10,000 already. You can also be sure of one other thing though: we’re super excited to see this out officially!
