BlackBerry today announced their next smartphone, another Android device called the DTEK60. Made for enterprises and organisations who have security and productivity needs, the DTEK60 will be specced to match many flagship devices but at a lower price point. BlackBerry’s manufacturing process makes use of a technique known as the Hardware Root of Trust, which adds security keys to the chipset inside the DTEK60 to prevent it from being spoofed or counterfeited. Their Secure Bootloader uses multi-stage verification to ensure that the Android OS hasn’t been tampered with in order to protect business data against hackers rooting the device. They’re also protecting all data with FIPS 140-2 encryption, and there’s a DTEK app to monitor and fix privacy violations.

The DTEK60 also has BlackBerry’s new Fingerprint sensor, which can save up to five different fingerprints.
When it comes to upgrading software, BlackBerry makes security patches available on the same day as Google/Nexus branded phones. Their BlackBerry Security Incident Response team rapidly addresses vulnerabilities in the DTEK60.

The DTEK60 is available in the US, Canada and parts of Europe for US$499. Global availability will come in a few weeks.
