Astro Picks Amazon Web Services As Cloud Partner

Across the region, more providers of entertainment and media services are looking to offer array of content to customers without the cost of managing and storing the massive volume of these data.

Thankfully for the likes of Astro and iflix two large entity offering OTT services to hundreds of thousand of users in Malaysia and South East Asia, professional computing and cloud storage provider Amazon Web Services is here to offer their expertise. Having already establish a strong presence and a string of reputable clientele, the latest to adopt AWS- Astro is leveraging on the services for its group-wide digital and business transformation incorporating a cloud and mobile-first, analytics driven approach for the organisation.

Astro is currently in 5.1 million homes reaching to 21 million family members who spend approximately  4 hours watching programs on the subscription service while 15.6 million listen to their radio programs. Recognising the need to serve new consumers who lead a digital lifestyle, the collaboration with AWS comes at a critical time, as the company prepares to serve the next generation of consumers through products and services that best suit their needs. Having a cloud-first infrastructure has enabled it to deliver scalable customer-centric service and care, as well as innovative and personalised digital-first products at a much faster pace, noted Astro Group CEO Datuk Rohana Rohzan.

Astro now uses Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3) to host more than 23,000 on-demand current and library titles for their connected set top boxes and OTT video streaming products. They also use Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) with more than a thousand compute instances running on a daily basis, and deliver close to 2 petabytes of content every month from the content delivery network using Amazon CloudFront.

Both, new company’s and those with legacy hardware are finding cloud solution as the best way forward leaving the management of complex and costly storage of data management to experts like AWS. Evident with Astro GO in Malaysia, and Tribe in Indonesia and Philippines, as well as e-commerce services like Go Shop in Malaysia and Singapore all moving to such infrastructures.
