Apple gains top spot, but Samsung still leads

A new report shared online confirmed that Apple has once again regained the top global smartphone vendor for 2016 from Samsung. According to Strategy Analytics, Apple now commands 17.8% percent of the global smartphone market in the fourth quarter of 2016, passing by Samsung with 17.7% of the same market.

This is not a surprising news, with Samsung affected by the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 incident, and resulted in Apple gaining ground with 800,000 more phones sold in the last quarter. On the other hand, Samsung still managed to beat the brands by being the top performer for the year 2016, with 20% market share. The best performer meanwhile is Oppo, with an annual growth of 99 percent, securing its fourth place in the global standing.

Huawei is third in the global standings, thanks to the effort of its brand growth in Europe, which leads it to achieve a double digit market share for the first time. Rounding the list up is Vivo, with 6.7% of the global market in the last quarter of 2016.

The numbers tell everything that we need to know – incidents will tarnish brand names somewhat, however in the long run it may not affect the standings of the brand as shown with the continuing first place position that Samsung is enjoying for 2016. What can we expect in 2017 – we just have to wait and see.
