Having taken part in almost all previous iterations Microsoft Imagine Cup events, it is now Malaysia’s turn to play host; indeed, the Microsoft Imagine Cup 2018 Regional Finals will be taking place right in the heart of Kuala Lumpur.

Malaysia, which has sent teams to the Imagine Cup Global Finals before, will be putting together a massive innovation showcase. Featuring 15 outstanding student teams from across the Asia Pacific (APAC), they’ll pitch their ideas to a prestigious judging panel. The winner will represent their country, and the APAC region at large, at the Imagine Cup Finals in Seatlle, Washington.
The Grand Prize winner at the Global Finals will take home US$100,000 in cash. Additionally, and more importantly, the winning team will have a private mentoring session with Microsoft CEO, Satya Nadella.
Among the teams that will compete, Malaysia’s very own Team HealthSight will be in the running. The team, from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, will put forward their vision of addressing nursing shortages. With Healthsight, an Intelligent Surveillance System, the team aims to prevent unwanted incidences that patients may experience.
The system they’ve develop uses deep-learning algorithms that run on Azure cognitive services. According to Team HealthSight, the system will pull data from the Closed-Circuit television (CCTV) that it will operate hand-in-hand with. Its primary systems includes a computer vision platform that can detect and track patients that have fallen. When an emergency arises, the service will alert nurses on their smartphones.
All these brilliant innovations will be on showcase tomorrow at the Microsoft Imagine Cup 2018 Regional Finals at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. Those keen to tune in can stream the event live from 9am onwards.
