February 2017: In a statement released, the government is considering suggestions to introduce a new frame under existing law, whereby it could soon be an offence for whoever uploading contents thats deemed offensive or falsified on the internet.

Malaysia Communication Multimedia Commission (MCMC) states the suggestions came about after receiving numerous complaints from the public, on the increase and spread of such false contents and offensive remarks that’s being posted online and on social media of recent times. The agency opines, with the advent of such new laws will help to create a better environment for users and propogate a positive and healthier usage of the internet. Although the existing Act is sufficient to take action againts perpertrators, a study is currently underway to expand the provisions that will soon encompass platforms beyond conventional medium and include online news portals as well.

“Users are advised to verify the credibility of information before sharing on social media, if unsure its better to refer them with reliable agnecies befor hand. In this context users can play a vital role in reporting these false news to the authorities for their attention and further action,” remarked MCMC.
