Samsung Electronics has unveiled its latest Onyx cinema LED screen for the European market at CineEurope 2025, marking a significant expansion of its cutting-edge display technology following its US debut at CinemaCon in April. The launch is seen as a reaffirmation of Samsung’s commitment to advancing premium moviegoing experiences across global cinema chains.
Hoon Chung, Executive Vice President of Samsung’s Visual Display Business, said the rollout in Europe represents a new chapter in cinema innovation, highlighting collaborations with leading exhibitors like Pathé Cinémas and creative partners including Pixar Animation Studios. He added that the latest Onyx technology is designed to elevate cinematic storytelling through immersive visuals and advanced HDR capabilities.
The new Onyx display, certified by Digital Cinema Initiatives (DCI), delivers 4K resolution at up to 120Hz frame rates and achieves peak brightness of 300 nits with true black levels and exceptional colour accuracy. Available in four standard screen widths—5, 10, 14, and 20 metres—the screen offers flexible scaling to suit various theatre configurations. Samsung is also introducing the industry’s first 10-year warranty for a cinema LED display, aimed at reducing total ownership costs and ensuring long-term reliability for exhibitors.
Samsung’s collaboration with Pixar Animation Studios continues to push the boundaries of HDR cinema. Pixar’s upcoming film Elio, premiering on June 18, has been mastered in 4K HDR for theatrical release on Onyx screens. Pixar plans to master future titles in the same DCI HDR format to ensure audiences experience its films with unmatched brightness and visual fidelity.
To support its HDR production efforts, Pixar will install a new Onyx screen at its campus in Emeryville, California, for use in evaluating colour and brightness, content quality control, and screening sessions. Jessie Schroeder, Vice President of Post Production at Pixar, said Onyx screens enable artists to showcase their work in vivid and dynamic detail, unlocking a new era of visual storytelling.
