Every visit to Tokyo if youre a tech geek, a must on the itinerary of places to go will include the Sony building in Ginza. For those who can recall, the showroom on the ground floor is where one gets to touch and demo the latest Sony products that are yet to hit the stores. When Sony announced the closure early last year amidst the company’s massive restructuring program, many were left with fond memories of the iconic building.

But now Sony has decided to re-open the spot as the Ginza Sony Park including occupying the public space located across from the Sukiyabashi Intersection that had served as “the garden of Ginza” since the opening of the Sony Building in 1966, and convert it into an ever-changing park experience. From the park’s opening in August this year until the autumn of 2020, Sony has made the decision to create a park instead of a building in the district of Ginza.

Ginza Sony Park will consist of a flat, 707-square meter above-ground section, and a 4-floor “Lower Park,” located underground, creating an open, vertical park connected by a central stairwell, that preserves the older unique structure of the former Sony Building. The new Sony building is slated to be completed in 2022 and until then this project is seen as a place to people to get together in a friendly park like environment.
