A super app you say? Interesting, interesting. Tell me more. Oh wait, that’s my job to you.

Okay so here’s the info. According to a BBC report, AirAsia founder, Tony Fernandes has revealed that he is working on building a new “super app” for the SEA region. It is said he aims to go up against the big dogs in the industry; other major mobile apps such as Grab, GoJek and WeChat. Big competition there, Tony.

So what is this new app we’re talking about? What does it do? What does it offer? No name for it yet but according to the BBC report, the new app will offer a variety of services such as delivery, shopping, payments, entertainment, and travel. So like Grab then?

However, the AirAsia founder did not go into specific details about the app, but speculations include the integration of the various businesses and services under the AirAsia Group which includes BigPay, OurShop, Santan, Tune Hotels, Tune Protect, Tune Talk and, of course, AirAsia in-flight services.

Fernandes said that he has been looking for new ways to generate income while his planes were grounded during the ongoing pandemic. Fair enough, gotta put food on the table somehow. He told the BBC he spent his time during the travel slump improving the brand’s mobile app and its BigPay payment platform.

“The downturn was a blessing in disguise in some ways as it allowed us to focus more on it. I know a super app sounds like a lofty target but Grab and GoJek also started out small as food or mobility apps,” he said.

AirAsia currently has a “rich database” of more than 60 million users as its starting point, the report added. It isn’t mentioned when it’s expected to launch this new “super app.” No word so far on when the app will be available or what it will officially offer to consumers so we’ll just have to wait till they officially announce it.
