Malaysian Roads Level Up From Potholes To Sinkholes; You’re Going To Want To Avoid These Roads

Think you’re safe? Think again! Ok lah, you are in actuality quite safe but for some strange reason, the roads in Malaysia seem to be going to the dogs, and not in the literal form that we’re normally used to. The appearance of two sink holes in Jalan Taman U Thant was followed by a massive crack in the road on Jalan Klang-Banting and both on the same day!

The sinkholes on Jalan Taman U Thant actually appeared within half an hour of each other on Sunday, prompting Kuala Lumpur mayor, Datuk Nor Hisham Ahmad Dahlan to inspect what happened and address the issue. According to Nor Hisham, the sinkholes are believed to be caused by a broken pipe but with investigations still ongoing, it’s hard to say for sure.

One sinkhole is bad, but two in the same area? That’s very worrying. Is the foundation on which these roads are built on starting to give way? Is the worst yet to come? Of course this is just the rambling thoughts of someone who doesn’t really know much about the issue but given the fact that the area has been hit by frequent flash floods since 2014, how stable can the area really be, right?

About 50km away in Jalan Klang-Banting, a massive crack in the road led to it being completely closed as authorities investigate what exactly it is that led to this apocalyptic looking incident.

Given that it’s been raining a hell of a lot in Malaysia, soil erosion and sedimentation are factors that are being looked at by the authorities. You’d think that the only things you’d have to worry about on roads are other cars or the odd jaywalker but literal sinkholes and apocalyptic looking cracks? What a time to be alive :’)

That being said, I’d avoid these two areas for now given the fact that there are road closures and full on investigation going on. Stay safe out there, people.
