As we’ve seen first hand throughout the last few months, the coronavirus pandemic has an uncanny knack for bringing out both the best and the worst in people. Some people have used it to display just how stupid they really are, while others have showcased that maybe the world isn’t as hopeless as we thought it was.
With so many celebrities coming forward to donate money or taking the time off to raise money for a good cause, one Indonesian Instagram influencer had the brilliant idea of auctioning off her virginity.. with a starting bid of RM590,000.. with all proceeds going to charity…during the holy month of Ramadan.
Yeah, not the best idea I’d say.
While some of you may be thinking, hm okay fair enough, the idea of sex workers hasn’t exactly taken off in conservative Indonesia just yet, and probably never will.
The influencer in question, Sarah Salsabila A.K.A Sarah Kiehl shocked her fans by taking to Instagram to announce that she would be auctioning off her virginity, with the starting bid being Rp.2Milyar (approx. RM591,000). Needless to say, the post went viral but not necessarily in the way she intended.
As you might expect, her followers weren’t too happy about it. Having deleted her original IG story where she announced her brilliant idea, she subsequently posted a public apology on her feed, clarifying that she was just being sarcastic and it was all merely a joke.

It turns out the whole purpose of her prank was to poke fun at the Indonesian public, who have not exactly been taking the whole COVID-19 situation in Indonesia that seriously. Sarah also apologised on video, breaking down in tears whilst explaining her thought process behind the whole joke.
Thus far, her apology has been met with mixed responses, with most people advising her not to do something like that again.
