Facebook have now announced their acquisition of one of the most popular GIF-sharing platforms, Giphy. The deal will reportedly cost Facebook $400 million, as they plan to integrate the Giphy’s GIF library onto Facebook’s platforms; Instagram, Facebook, Messenger and WhatsApp even further.
Giphy, the extensive library of GIFs allows users to edit and make their own moving pictures with no sound, has been available on Facebook-owned services for a while now. But the social media platform only adds in 50 percent of Giphy traffic that comes from their services. Which makes sense, considering Facebook owns a number of the major social media sites / messenger apps.
Facebook also says, this will make it easier for Instagram users to find the ‘perfect GIF and stickers’ for Instagram stories and direct messages.
“Both our services are big supporters of the creator and artist community, and that will continue. Together, we can make it easier for anyone to create and share their work with the world.” said Vishal Shah, Vice President of Product at Facebook.
