Ah WhatsApp, my love-hate relationship with the popular messaging app might just sizzle out after this latest news. Just earlier this January, WhatsApp became one of the only apps to have over five billion downloads on the Google Play Store. That should be enough to tell you just how widely used WhatsApp is, but in those five billion downloads there’s bound to be multiple installs, trying to use WhatsApp on another device, at the same time.

But now, after WABetaInfo took a deep dive into the latest beta, they’ve found evidence of multiple device support. They also say that this feature will likely be introduced sometime in the future. The way they found it is by triggering different event messages which refers to multiple device support.

They message shows that the user’s ‘device list changed’, which happens when the encryption key changes.

Essentially meaning, one WhatsApp account, on multiple devices at the same time. This has been a highly requested feature from users, and even me. To the point where I had to list each of WhatsApp’s flaws as a messaging platform, and missing multiple device support was one of my biggest problems with it.

When this new feature rolls out (eventually), you’ll be able to keep WhatsApp on your phone, on a secondary device, a tablet, and probably more. Which is a very late feature addition, but a welcome one nonetheless. The feature is currently under development, so we don’t know the exact mechanics of how it’d work. But at the very least, now we know they’re working on it, so we can expect it some time soon.
