The OnePlus 8 Pro Leaks Has Got Us Questioning If ANYONE Knows What The Best Kind Of Display Is

In case you missed it, the OnePlus 8 Pro was leaked last week and the company looks all set to ditch the water-drop display it used for the OnePlus 7T and the infinity display it opted to go for with the OnePlus 7T Pro in favour of a punch hole display.

The subject of displays and which type of display is the best has been a polarizing topic the past couple of years. Ever since Apple rolled up with the divisive notch, companies have been trying to one up Apple and get rid of the that damn black bar that obstruct users from having a perfect full view display.

First, it was the water-drop display (dew drop, tear drop, infinity U, infinity V, we’ve heard it all). The design and look of the water-drop display was great, but at the end of the day, it was still rather noticeable. Taking note of this, the quest to make the notch even less intrusive continued.

This led to a period where companies seemed to be (and appear to still be) undecided on what exactly is the best step forward. There were brands like Vivo, who got rid of the notch altogether by equipping their device with a pop-up camera. Other brands, such as HONOR, and later Samsung, opted for a punch-hole display, where the notch simply consists of, well.. a punch hole.

Today, it seems like the industry now finds itself at a cross roads. Of course, no one wants a notch, but no one really wants a pop-up selfie camera either (unless of course, it’s done by Apple). Some are even looking at getting rid of the front camera altogether, as is the case with the Meizu Pro 7, which has a smaller screen on the back for you to take all your selfies.

Huawei, who have pretty much manufactured phones that come with every type of notch known to man, seems to have come full circle and settled for a notch very much like that of the iPhone in their flagship Mate 30 Pro device, which is rather ironic but unsurprising given their knack for knocking off Apple.

With under display selfie cameras still in development, pretty much every smartphone manufacturer out there (besides Apple) seem to lack any sort of clear direction. It’s just kind of strange to see big name brands alternating between different types of notches whilst marketing each as “the best”.
