Sony Is Opening A New Movie Studio Exclusively Focused On Videogame Adaptations

PlayStation Productions all set to turn your favourite PS4 games into movies

I’m sure every gamer out there has thought to themselves “This game would make a sick movie”. Well it as turns out, the people at Sony have probably been thinking the same for a while now. The company have just announced a new production studio called PlayStation Productions that will focus exclusively on adapting the company’s hit videogame franchises into TV shows and movies.

PlayStation Productions will be led by Asad Qizilbash of Sony’s PlayStation marketing group, and overseen by Sony Interactive Entertainment boss, Shawn Layden.

Sony didn’t just announce this without putting in any groundwork. According to Layden, there are already a number of titles in production, though he was sure to make it clear that the new studio won’t be following a set cadence for its film releases, like that adopted by Marvel Studios. Playstation Productions have apparently also been speaking to a number of Hollywood producers to get an understanding about the production process and what exactly to expect.

That being said however, Layden also made it clear that Playstation Productions won’t be doing a like for like remake of the gamer. What Sony wants to do is make an extension of the game molded in the vision of someone who understands the franchise and can adapt it for movie-going audiences.

Goodluck with that.

To be honest, PS exclusive games are pretty much already movies with the amount of cutscenes the games have and the only surprising thing about this announcement is that it wasn’t made sooner. As I’ve mentioned above, gamers have been wishing for movie adaptations of their favourite games for the longest time.

Is Hollywood ready for videogame movies? It’s promising that Sony is realizing the untapped potential of some of their titles and if the success of Detective Pikachu is anything to go by, then yes. But it’s also worth mentioning that there have been countless of games who failed to make the jump from console to the big screen. For every Detective Pikachu, there’s a Bloodrayne, Doom or even Max Payne. Oh God were those movies awful. Regardless, if anyone’s going to make a movie adaptation of a videogame, who better to do than Sony, right?

I for one am looking forward to that Last Of Us movie Sony and Naughty Dog teased us with way back in 2014.
