The CIA Is Now On Instagram

Felt cute, might arm third world militants later IDK

Yes. You’ve read that right; The CIA, supposedly the most secretive organization in the world, opened up shop on Instagram just last week. Why on earth would the folks at Langley even want an Instagram presence? Well, a CIA representative said the agency aims to use the account as a recruiting tool and to increase transparency about its activities, which is rather ironic given that Instagram is pretty much ground zero for deceptive, staged, superficial and on the surface content.

The CIA can now count itself among the sea of filtered “I woke up like this” selfies, influencers posing with sponsored products in exotic places and celebrities posting staged Instagram stories. And they seem to have taken to the social networking site like a duck takes to water. Their first post is an obviously staged shot of a fake CIA employee’s desk, with props such as a wig disguise, a paper bag labelled “Top Secret Pulp”, a notebook and a bunch of files, and the caption being “I spy with my little eye..”.

It pretty much revealed how thirsty they are for likes— Staged shots? Check. Cheesy quotes? Check. Out of context props? Check. To be fair to them though, they obviously understand what Instagram is all about. There is also apparently a bunch of easter eggs for all you CIA nerds out there, so be sure to check it out and see how many you can spot.

Creating an Instagram account is part of the US spy agency’s effort to recruit a younger generation of officers, agents and analysts. The CIA already has a Twitter account, which has more than 2.5 million followers. It’s mostly used to recruit new agents and offer history on the agency and some of its key figures over the years.

At the time of writing, the Instagram account has already amassed 127,000 followers.
