Ever since the internet and social media hit mainstream, many Malaysians took the platform to communicate and voice out their views on various issues. However, there were also those who used the new found outlet to spread their own agenda, the kinds that can dismantle racial harmony and threaten to stir religious emotions by inciting hatred among races.

Aware of such borderline individuals/groups, MCMC with the enforcement of the Royal Police (PDRM) has vowed not to compromise on such acts and will not hesitate to take stern actions against these perpetrators. Between 2018 to February 2019, 247 cases were opened for investigation by MCMC with 5 of them already sentenced to imprisonment or fines, at the same time 2358 cases are currently under technical review and has been passed to various agencies for verification before they get moved up as well.

Among these, the agency also acted on 3407 social media accounts that had either fake ID and those that were used to spread messages that incite hatred, extreme in nature, propagating violence and outright fabricated lies have also been shut down with the cooperation of the owners of the social media platform. Clamping down such activity online is necessary to prevent groups from reacting negatively on unsubstantiated news spread by those who push their own cause without any concern of the consequences.

MCMC has the jurisdiction to monitor and act upon any untoward activity that occurs in the cyberspace under the Communication Act, which gives it powers to shut down and bring the culprits to face the law.
