The 90s was a fine time for the beat-em-up genre. For many who grew up with the Sega Genesis, their childhood consisted of one series, Streets of Rage. After 24 long years, Sega has decided to revive the arcade brawler with Streets of Rage 4, partnering with publisher Dotemu and developer Lizardcube to bring the series back to life.
Streets of Rage 4 moves away from pixel artwork, and instead boasts hand-drawn sprites and animation. However, the game will still feature Axel and Blaze, both returning characters in the series. The classic beat-em-up gameplay that fans know and love is also being retained, with fresh new mechanics being added on top of it. As for the music and aesthetic, no doubt one look will pull fans’ hearts back into the 90s era. With a brand new story, as well as new stages and enemies, this looks like a great entry for both newcomers and old fans.
Sega’s Streets of Rage series started out in 1991 on the Sega Genesis. An instant hit, the first Streets of Rage went on to spawn two sequels in 1992 and 1994 respectively. One of the most memorable aspects of the series was its smashing soundtrack, composed by one Yuzo Koshiro. The composer is still active, known nowadays for his work on the Etrian Odyssey series.
