It has been predicted that artificially intelligent (AI) machines will replace the position of teachers in the future. According to Sir Anthony Sheldon, master of Wellington College, a technological revolution will sweep aside old notions of education and change the world within the next 10 years.
He also believes that school teachers will lose their traditional role and become little more than classroom assistants. They will most probably stand on the side lines to set up equipment, help children when necessary and maintain discipline. However, the essential job of instilling knowledge into young minds will wholly be done by AI computers.
“These are adaptive machines that adapt to individuals. They will listen to the voices of the learners, read their faces and study them in the way gifted teachers study their students, which is beyond anything we’ve seen in the industrial revolution with other new technology,” states Sheldon.
In these AI classrooms, each child has the opportunity to progress at his or her own pace, as the technology can be entirely personalised and move at the speed of the learner. Sheldon sadly admits that even though it would be a tragedy, but he hopes that the prediction will become a reality.
“The machines will know what excites you the most and gives you a natural level of challenge that is not too hard or too easy, but just right for you,” he continues.
