The concept of virtual reality (VR) has been out in the market for quite some time now. It can range from basic VR-enabled gadgets such as Google Cardboard to more advanced headsets like the HTC Vive. The good news is that ECS has provided us with our very own Orion S1 VR to try out this up and coming trend. I instantly strapped myself with the device when I got it and dived into it before even looking at the instruction manual; who needs it anyway?
Going Basic
It is important to emphasise that the Orion S1 is a basic type of headset, much like a Google Cardboard. Detection of your full gesture with dozens of external sensors and cameras is mostly for advanced version that you will not find in this one. It is also important for your smartphone device to have motion detectors, or else it will not work as per desired.
What Do You Have In It?
Here’s a list of some of the functions this particular model has to offer. First off, the Orion S1 has a built-in headphone to make your experience more immersive. Settings of volume, eye positioning and proximity of your attached phone to the lens are all easily adjustable with this device.
Once everything has been setup properly, I loaded up some apps and games to see the effects of virtual reality on the Orion. Visually, it looks good, but it is depended on the app that provide the visual as well. It does produce that depth of field that allows you to feel like you’re in a scene – an outcome that you should get out of from a VR device.
Am I Fulfilled?
Everything you need for a basic VR experience is here. The external lighting is properly blocked, it has decent audio from its headphone and the lens’ image is good. A minor inconvenience I encountered was plugging in the headphones jack is the port is at the bottom of the phone. It is designed mainly for devices with headphone jack on the top. My concern for this headset lies in the value, as there are many more basic and affordable options out in this competitive market.
