According to Sinar Harian, the government has officially announced that the age limit for youth will be lowered to 30, effective January 1, 2026. The Minister of Youth and Sports, Hannah Yeoh, revealed that this adjustment is part of amendments to the Youth Organizations and Youth Development Act (Amendment) 2019 [Act A1602].

The current age limit for youth is 40 years old, and this amendment reflects the government’s commitment to aligning policies with the changing demographics and needs of the country’s younger population.

Minister Hannah Yeoh explained that the amendments include lowering the age limit for youth to 30 years, specifying the age range for youth organization leaders or office bearers from 18 to 30 years, and limiting the tenure of youth organization leaders to four years.

“The government, in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) and the Malaysian Youth Council (MBM), has reached a consensus on the effective date. The official announcement regarding the commencement date has been published on the Attorney General’s Department website on November 20, 2023,” stated Minister Hannah Yeoh during a press conference at the International Youth Center (IYC) in Cheras.

She emphasized the importance of disseminating this information promptly to all stakeholders associated with youth affairs, urging awareness of the enforcement of these amendments, especially concerning the age limit for youth.

The decision follows a series of discussions and consultations between the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Malaysian Youth Council, demonstrating the government’s commitment to ensuring that policies related to youth are relevant and reflective of the evolving needs of the country’s young population.

As Malaysia prepares for this significant change in its youth policy, effective from January 1, 2026, it is anticipated to have a positive impact on youth participation and representation in various aspects of society.
